Juan J. Linz: An Intellectual and Personal Biography of the ‘Maestro-Compositore’

Philippe C. Schmitter

If by ‘maestro’ one means someone who assembles a large group of sub-ordinates and then conducts them to play the music of someone else, Juan José Linz is not and has never been a ‘maestro.’ He is and has always been a ‘compositore’ – someone who writes and plays his own music. However, since he has frequently assembled a few associates and both written and conducted music with them, let us call him a ‘maestro-compositore’ of political sociology/science.

Let me first display some basic facts about our ‘maestro-compositore’. Juan José Linz Storch de Gracia was born on 24 December 1926 in Bonn, Germany. He holds the following advanced degrees: Licenciado en Ciencias Políticas y Económicas, Universidad de Madrid, 1947; Licenciado en Derecho, Universidad de Madrid, 1948; and PhD in Sociology, Columbia University, 1959, as well as: ‘doctor honoris causa,’ of Universidad del País Basco, 2002; University of Oslo, 2000; Philipps-Universität zu Marburg, 1992; Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, 1992; Georgetown University, 1992; Universidad de Granada, 1976; the Johan Skytte Prize in Political Science from Uppsala University, 1996, and the Premio Principe de Austurias de Ciencias Sociales, 1987; and other honours and awards too numerous to list. He started his professional career as an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Columbia University, 1960–66, before being promoted to Associate Professor of Sociology, Columbia University, 1966–68. He then moved to become Professor of Sociology and Political Science at Yale University, 1968–1977, then Pelatiah Perit Professor of Political and Social Science at Yale University, 1977–89, and finally Sterling Professor of Political and Social Science at Yale University, 1989 – present. He has also held innumerable visiting professorships in Europe and the United States of America.

In addition to over 200 book chapters and articles, his major publications include: Roberto Michels, Political Sociology, and the Future of Democracy (with H. Chehabi), 2006; Fascismo, autoritarismo, totalitarismo: Connessioni e differenze, 2003; Totalitarian and Authoritarian Regimes, 2000; (with H. Chehabi, eds.), Sultanistic Regimes, 1998; (with A. Stepan), Problems of Democratic Transition and Consolidation, 1996; (with Y. Shain, eds.), Between States: Interim Governments and Democratic Transitions, 1995; (with A. Valenzuela, eds.), The Failure of Presidential Democracy, 2 vols., 1994; (with L. Diamond and S. M. Lipset, eds.), Democracy in Developing Areas: Latin America, 1989; (with L. Diamond and S. M. Lipset, eds.), Democracy in Developing Areas: Asia, 1989; (with L. Diamond and S. M. Lipset, eds.), Democracy in Developing Areas: Africa, 1988; (with J. R. Montero, eds.) Crisis ’y cambio: Electores ’y partido en la España de los años ochenta, 1986; (with M. Gomez-Reino, D. Vila and F. A. Orizo, eds.), Informe Sociológico sobre cambio político en España, 1976–81; (with A. Stepan, eds.), The Breakdown of Democratic Regimes, 1978; and (with A. de Miguel), Los Empresarios ante el poder Público, 1966.

This abbreviated Curriculum Vitae illustrates something that Juan Linz has in common with many of the best ‘comparativists’ of his generation, i.e. training and professional activity in both Europe and the United States.
